Standard aircraft and light/sport aircraft can be quoted through automated systems but Experimental Aircraft for the most part must be quoted by an underwriter. We have a sizeable client base of experimental aircraft owners and are well versed on their unique coverage options. (ie. Restriction fly off coverage, Passenger Coverage, etc.) Don't let the marketing folks fool you, there is no AOPA or EAA product out there that we don't have access to as well. There is nothing exclusive about those programs.

Everyone wants to pay the least amount of premium but have the ALL inclusive coverage that protects and indemnifies them from any sort of exposure or loss. Well no such policy exists and never will exist but with help from Colt we can proivde you with the most comprehensive coverage available. .

Aircraft Insurance policies have the same general makeup.

  • Declarations
  • Insuring Agreements
  • Conditions of Insurance
  • Exclusions
  • Definitions
  • Endorsements

These sections form the contract between you and the insurance company regarding the coverage they will provide to you. It is in your best interest to read and understand your policy and ask your agent any questions if you don't understand something.

Personal Aircraft insurance quoting process has come a long way in the last few years.

It used to be that the insurance company hired someone to review each aircraft insurance application and decide whether or not if that insurance company wanted to offer coveragae and at what premium point to offer that coverage. Today with the help of computers and the internet many companies have developed real time quoting for personal piston powered aircraft. They use the same criteria as they always have only in the form of tables and calculations and based on the information entered they can quote real time without user intervention.

The goal for the insurance company is efficiency and the result for the consumer is lower premiums and a much more competitive marketplace for their insurance policy.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • How Many Companies are there in the Aviation Insurance Marketplace

As of 2012 there are over 15 companies offering Aviation Insurance Coverage in the United States as an addmitted carrier.

  • How is my policy rated?

Your policy is rated on a number of different criteria and that criteria varies based upon which company is looking at your coverage. But the general criteria that they will use is

    Pilot Hours, history & Age

Type of Aircraft (ie. Retractable Gear/Tailwheel/Sea/Multi-Engine etc)

    Planned Uses

    Loss History

    Number of Pilots

Airport the Aircraft is based at

Is the aircraft Hangared or Tied

  • How can I lower my Premium?

There are a number of different items you can do depending on your situation and current coverage. The first is to make sure you are insuring your aircraft for its actual value and not perceived value.

If your not financing your aircraft and own it outright you can look at Ground Not In Motion or Ground Not in Flight coverage for the aircraft hull.

Fly more accident free hours, the most important factor in rating are the pilot hours and loss history

Participate in recurrent training on a regular basis and make sure we know about it

  • I'm a student pilot, can I get insurance coverage on my own aircraft?

Yes, that is not a problem. The policy will most likely be written that you must be under the direct supervision of a CFI at all times until you are Private Pilot - Airplane Single Engine Land rated.

  • I've had to turn in a claim. Am I uninsurable?

Not at all. You may have to stay with the insurance company who paid your claim for awhile after 3 or 5 years they pretty much forget about it.
